Introduction
The BIMSA member seminar is a weekly event during which researchers engage in discussions about their extensive research interests, addressing a diverse audience that includes fellow researchers and all postdoctoral scholars within the institute. This forum provides a unique privilege and an invaluable opportunity for each research faculty member, serving as a speaker, to introduce their research field, promote the subject within the institute, and ignite the potential for future collaborations with other research groups within the institute.
The lecture format consists of a 30-minute colloquium-style presentation, thoughtfully tailored to be accessible to postdoctoral scholars and researchers from diverse disciplines within the institute. Following the presentation, a 15-minute discussion session is anticipated, involving active participation from postdocs representing various fields.
It is mandatory for all postdocs at the institute to actively participate in this event. The enthusiastic involvement of faculty members is greatly valued and will prove mutually beneficial for both the speaker and the junior audience.
To Speakers
The primary objective of the member seminar is to acquaint fellow institute members with your research field and the ongoing research within your group. The majority of your audience consists of postdoctoral scholars from various disciplines. Therefore, the lecture format should not be overly technical; instead, it should take the form of a broad and accessible introduction to your research activities, following the style of a colloquium talk.
An ideal lecture is anticipated to strike a balance between several key elements:
1. A compelling motivation for the study, highlighting the importance and relevance of the subject.
2. Providing the broader context, depicting the big picture of where these studies fit within the larger landscape of knowledge.
3. Discussion of the expected applications of the results, highlighting their to other subjects.
4. Discussion of the expected applications of the results, demonstrating the practical significance of the research.
5. Establishing connections to other disciplines, showcasing the interdisciplinary nature of the subject.
6. A concise review of the main achievements within the field to provide the necessary background.
7. Emphasizing your own contributions over the past several years, with a particular focus on recent accomplishments.
This comprehensive approach ensures that your lecture effectively engages the audience, offering both depth and breadth in understanding the research and its significance.
For the slide preparation, speakers are highly recommended seeking input from a colleague in a different research area within the institute. Ensure your slides feature an ample number of pertinent images related to your research. Furthermore, you are kindly requested to submit your slides to the organizers well in advance of your presentation, preferably at the beginning of the workweek before your talk. The presentations of those who do not receive the final confirmation from the organizers by the end of the workday on Friday will be rescheduled accordingly, based on the next available slot on the waiting list.
