Abstract
This is the first talk in a series on applications of commutative algebra and algebraic geometry on spline theory. Splines are piecewise polynomials, which play a key role in approximation theory. The set of splines has rich algebraic structures. This time, I am going to briefly recall the classical algebraic framework of splines. In particular, I am going to talk about the cofactor criterion, the dimension counting problem and Billera-Schenck-Stillman complex.
