Willmore Surfaces
The Willmore energy measures the bending energy of a membrane in 3-space, or more geometrically speaking, the roundness of a surface. When properly defined, it is invariant under conformal metric changes of the ambient space. Thus its minimizers can be viewed as the optimal realization of a given surface in 3-space. In this course we want to study critical points of Willmore energy under topological and conformal constraints.
