Abstract
Levin-Wen models (string network models) are effective lattice models for a large class of 2+1D topological phases. They can be viewed as discrete topological quantum field theories with generalized gauge symmetries, in the language of tensor categories. In this talk, I will try to explain how the tensor category provides a conceptual framework for the gauge structure in these models. I will review the properties in the Levin-Wen models and various extensions of these models.
