Quantum Instruction Set Architecture: The Good, the Bad, and the Future

摘要

Since Shor’s algorithm demonstrated quantum computing’s potential for exponential speedups in solving critical problems like integer factorization, the field has drawn sustained, intense interest from both academia and industry. From fundamental physics experiments in 1990s laboratories---where only a handful of qubits could be manipulated—--to today’s ability to precisely control hundreds of qubits for preliminary computing trials, humanity stands analogous to our ancestors when they first mastered fire: we are now learning to harness the revolutionary power of qubit manipulation. In this report, I will focus on key advancements in the design principles and engineering implementation of quantum computing instruction set architectures, outline the major challenges currently faced, and discuss directions for future development.

演讲者介绍

Jianxin Chen is a tenured associate professor in the Department of Computer Science and Technology at Tsinghua University. His recent research focuses on the system design and implementation of quantum computers, as well as quantum error correction and fault tolerance. He earned his Bachelor of Science (2005) and Doctor of Philosophy (2010) degrees in Computer Science from Tsinghua University. Subsequently, he conducted postdoctoral research at the Institute for Quantum Computing, University of Waterloo / University of Guelph (Canada), and the Joint Center for Quantum Information and Computer Science (QuICS), University of Maryland, College Park (USA). Prior to joining the Department of Computer Science and Technology at Tsinghua University in March 2025, he led R\&D efforts for both the systems team and the North American team at the Alibaba Quantum Laboratory. Prof. Chen has authored over 100 high-profile publications, including flagship journals such as {\em Nature Physics}, {\em Nature Computational Science}, and {\em Physical Review Letters}, as well as top-tier computer science and quantum computing conferences including {\em QIP}, {\em ISCA}, {\em ASPLOS}, and {\em DAC}.
