Modular categories can be viewed as categorical generalizations of non-degenerate quadratic forms on finite abelian groups. They arise naturally in the study of various areas of mathematics and physics, including representation theory, topological quantum field theory and topological quantum computation. In this talk, we will give a brief introduction to modular categories with an emphasis on their arithmetic properties. Then we will talk about the current progress on the classification on modular categories, including the recent result on the classification of transitive modular categories.
