摘要
In quantum phases of matter, the interplay between symmetry and topology can lead to many exotic and intriguing quantum many-body phenomena. Coupling the quantum system to the gauge field associated with the global symmetries has proven to be a very effective approach to probing the symmetry-topology interplay in the original quantum phase and constructing new quantum phases of matter. In this talk, I will present a general framework for gauging a continuous global symmetry in a 2+1d topological phase. A key component of this framework is the connection between the fractionalization pattern of the global symmetry and the (emergent) one-form symmetries in the original topological phase. In the absence of ‘t Hooft anomaly, this framework provides a general closed-form expression of the new 2+1d topological phase as the result of gauging. If the global symmetry in the original 2+1d topological phase is anomalous, this framework yields the expression of the ‘t Hooft anomaly in terms of a 3+1d topological action. I will discuss examples with global U(1) and other Lie group symmetries.
