摘要
The analog of an extreme-mass-ratio inspiral in Newtonian physics is given by the orbit of a point particle and a larger body about their center of mass, described by Keplerian two-body motion. A point mass creates a gravitational potential that it does not experience the effect of, instead moving under the influence of the external gravitational potential of the larger mass. This setting, although different in many ways from the physics of the self-force, helps provide a starting point for generalisations. We continue by discussing the notion of a self-force in the case of flat spacetime electromagnetism, followed by the case of curved spacetime. This sets the foundation for an introduction to the gravitational self-force in general relativity and the equations of motion for a particle, where its motion is influenced by its own field.
